Climate Information for Efrat, the Etzion Bloc, and the Hebron Mountains
Efrat is located in the Etzion Bloc south of Jerusalem on the peaks of the Central Mountain range at an elevation of 900-1000 meters above sea level. The climate is Mediterranean. Winters are cold and rainy and summers are hot and dry. Annual precipitation in Efrat is 450-500mm. Most of the rain falls from December to February. At times, the rain is accompanied by thunderstorms and hail.
The rain that falls in the Etzion Bloc and in the Hebron Mountains can cause flash floods in the river beds of the Dead Sea area and the Judean Desert. One river, the Tekoa River, flows into the Dargot River. Rain that falls in the area around Herodion and Tekoa can cause flash floods in the Dargot River.
Snow falls from time to time on the peaks of the Central Mountains including Efrat, Hebron, and Hilhul. Snow collects on the ground and can cause roadways to be closed to vehicular traffic. Snow is usually accompanied by strong northwesterly winds. Sometimes there is snow in Efrat but not in Jerusalem.
Temperatures in this region range from 11-13C during the day to 3-6C at night. Frost and very cold weather are common in the winter. Fog is common in all months of the year. At times the fog reduces visibility to only some tens of meters.
Summers are relatively mild and cool, especially in the evenings and at night. Daytime highs in the summer are 28-30C and lows are 18-20C. Daytime relative humidity is generally in the 35-40% range. Heat stress is moderate.
It comes as something of a surprise that there is high air pollution in the Etzion Bloc. The northwesterly winds push the pollution from Tel Aviv and the Inland Plain directly toward the Etzion Bloc. The pollution is exacerbated by the presence of many dairy ranches and chicken farms in the area.
