Climate Information for Haifa (the lower city)
Haifa is located on the northern coastal plain. Its elevation ranges from sea level to 450meters above sea level on the Carmel Mountain Ridge and at Haifa University.
The Carmel Mountains cause the weather to be a bit different in Haifa than in other coastal areas. Precipitation at the port averages 570mm annually while on the Carmel Mountains the yearly average is 600-620mm. The Carmel Mountains also cause the Haifa area to have more thunderstorms than in most other areas of Israel. One result of the many thunderstorms is flooding from very intense rain early in the winter.
The Carmel Mountains also affect local temperatures. The mountains intensify the easterly-southeasterly winds such that the sea breeze that cools the air to some extent along the coast, comes a bit late in the day in Haifa. Temperatures there are 2C higher during the day in the summer than in other coastal areas. Summertime highs are 32 in Haifa and relative humidity is usually 60-65%. Heat stress in Haifa is moderate to severe.
In the winter months December-February, daytime temperatures usually range between 17-21C. Winters in Haifa are relatively rainy.
The highest temperature ever recorded in Haifa was 45C in May, 1942 and the lowest temperature ever recorded in Haifa port was -1C in December 1972.
